Chino High senior and Arizona commit Mia Chavez, the reigning CIF Southern Section Division 3 cross country champion and winner of both the 800- and 1,600-meter Division 2 section titles in May, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming the first student-athlete in program history to capture a section cross country championship Nov. 20 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, and her opportunity to become the first Chino competitor to earn all-state honors in the Division 3 state final Nov. 27 at Woodward Park in Fresno. Chavez reflects on her Oct. 22 matchup against Georgia McCorkle of Agoura and Sydney Rome of Yorba Linda in the Division 3-4-5 sweepstakes race at the Mt. SAC Invitational and what she learned from her third-place finish to prepare for the rematch at the section final. She also revisits her journey from finishing 32nd at the section championship as a freshman to winning the individual title as a senior. Chavez examines her 16th-place result at the 2019 state final and her return to Woodward Park to compete Oct. 9 at the ASICS Clovis Invitational and how significant it was to run in the girls championship race and cover the 5-kilometer layout in 17:52.7, eclipsing the 18-minute barrier for the first time. She analyzes the opportunity to square off in the Division 3 state final against two-time individual champion Riley Chamberlain of Del Oro, as well as Santa Rosa Montgomery freshman Hanne Thomsen, and how beneficial it was to race against both competitors at the ASICS Clovis Invitational. Chavez explains how meaningful it would be to become the first Chino cross country runner to earn all-state honors, especially after capturing the 800 championship at the California state track and field showcase in June at Arcadia High. She shares how instrumental her success during the spring track season was, including victories in the 800 and mile at the Arcadia Invitational, in building confidence for her final cross country season, and how proud she is to have built a resume that includes 58.2 in the 400, 2:08.12 in the 800, 4:55.7 in the mile, 16:33.2 in a 3-mile cross country race and her personal-best 17:52.7 at Woodward Park. Chavez speaks about her decision to attend Arizona and her motivation to help build the program in cross country and track to compete with the top schools in the Pac-12 Conference. She also shares how impactful her social media presence has become, thanks to her family support, and how she has used those experiences and lessons from establishing her platform with Because She's Amazing to create the proper foundation to be able to benefit from the new Name, Image and Likeness rules for college student-athletes once she arrives in Tucson to begin school next fall.
